On 8 March, the world celebrated International Women’s Day with the theme \u2018Choose to Challenge\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We saw inspiring examples of women challenging the status quo in their careers and family lives. Yet, this mindset doesn\u2019t always extend to money matters – especially when it comes to investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only 28% of Singapore women feel confident and knowledgeable about investments, compared to 48% of men, based on the OCBC 2020 Financial Wellness Index. 75% of men have investments but just 60% of women do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investing is the most important money move that many women aren\u2019t making. By leaving your savings in cash<\/a>, you\u2019re not just losing out to inflation but also missing out on market gains that can be earned over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start where you are <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A question our wealth experts usually get is \u201cHow do I start investing?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer depends on your unique financial situation, but here\u2019s what to have in place before you head into the world of investing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. First, you should have an emergency fund<\/a>. We suggest keeping three to six months\u2019 worth of your take-home pay in there, but how much to set aside depends on your needs and lifestyle.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    1. Next, check that you have adequate insurance coverage and no outstanding high interest debt such as credit card debt.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      1. After settling these essentials, determine how much of your surplus funds you can set aside for investments. You can follow the 50\/30\/20 method: 50% of your paycheck is spent on needs, 30% on wants, and 20% for savings and \/ or investments. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        If you\u2019ve reached your target for your emergency fund, you may also wish to earmark the full 20% for investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        According to the same OCBC survey, 42% of women don\u2019t know the best way to grow their money. Many women (38%) still feel that investing is gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The truth is, there is nothing complicated about investing. You can be a successful investor just by knowing the basics. Invest in low-cost index funds<\/a>, diversify, and stay invested for the long haul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        One popular type of index fund is the exchange traded fund (ETF)<\/a>. ETFs replicate the performance of a market benchmark or index. One example is the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, better known as SPY. With just one ETF, you are effectively investing in the stocks of all 500 companies on the S&P 500 index. That\u2019s instant diversification! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
