Here’s why growing your income may need to go beyond your monthly paycheque.

For many Singaporeans, the financial equation feels increasingly familiar: your salary is going up, but somehow your money doesn’t seem to stretch as far as it used to.

Between 2019 and 2025, the median gross monthly income of full-time employed residents rose from S$4,563 to S$5,775 — an approximately 27% increase. Over roughly the same period, the HDB Resale Price Index rose by almost 55%.

While salary growth is important, your paycheque isn’t the only number that matters. The bigger question is: is your money growing fast enough to keep up with the cost of living?

Table of contents

How much has the cost of living risen in Singapore?

Why leaving your money idle can cost you

How to make your money work harder

Where Income+ Max comes into the picture

Building income without putting growth aside

How much has the cost of living risen in Singapore?

Over the past few years, Singapore households have had to contend with higher prices across a range of everyday expenses. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures changes in the prices of a basket of goods and services commonly purchased by households, rose by 16.3% between 2019 and 2024.

(Note: a lower annual inflation rate does not mean prices have fallen, but that they are rising more slowly.)

Housing is an even more striking example. Between Q3 2019 and Q42025, the HDB resale price index climbed 56%.

Meanwhile, median gross monthly income for full-time employed residents increased about 27% from S$4,563 in 2019 to S$5,775 in 2025.

This doesn’t mean every Singaporean’s salary or expenses have moved in exactly the same way. Individual experiences vary considerably depending on age, industry, household size and lifestyle. But the comparison highlights an important personal finance lesson: earning more is only one part of keeping up with the rising cost of living.

Why leaving your money idle can quietly erode its value

Imagine you have S$50,000 sitting in an account earning little to no interest. The number on your bank statement may remain the same after a decade, but the amount of goods and services that S$50,000 can buy may gradually decline as prices rise.

That’s the effect of inflation on purchasing power.

If inflation averages 2% a year, for example, S$50,000 would need to grow to roughly S$60,950 over 10 years simply to maintain the same purchasing power. At 3% inflation, it would need to reach around S$67,196.

This is why personal finance isn’t just about saving more, but also considering how to optimise your idle cash.

Of course, investing isn’t a guaranteed solution to inflation. Markets can fall, and different investments carry different levels of risk. But over longer time horizons, investing can give your money an opportunity to generate returns rather than simply sitting idle.

For investors who are looking to stretch their dollar further, the goal isn’t necessarily to chase the highest possible return, but to build a portfolio that matches your goals while giving your money multiple ways to potentially work harder—be it through capital growth, regular income, or both.

How can you make your money work harder?

One way to think about investing is to give different parts of your portfolio different jobs.

Some investments may be focused primarily on long-term capital growth. Others may be designed to generate regular income. And for many investors, combining the two can make sense.

Income-generating investments can provide another potential source of cash flow beyond your salary. Depending on the investment, this income might come from bond coupons, dividends or other strategies.

That can be particularly useful at different stages of your financial journey. If you’re still in your wealth-building years, you could reinvest income generated by your investments and allow it to compound over time. Later, you may prefer to take the income as cash to supplement your salary or meet regular expenses.

The key is diversification. Rather than relying on one asset class or one source of income, a diversified portfolio can combine different assets and strategies that may behave differently in different market environments.

That’s the thinking behind Syfe’s Income+ suite: giving investors access to professionally managed portfolios designed around generating regular income, while taking different approaches to risk, income and growth.

Enter Income+ Max

For investors looking to take the income strategy a step further, Income+ Max is designed to pursue higher levels of income while retaining the potential for long-term capital growth.

It targets 8–10% p.a. in regular monthly payouts, making it the highest-income strategy in the Income+ range. Unlike a traditional income portfolio built around a single asset class, Income+ Max takes a multi-asset approach, combining equities, fixed income and gold with complementary income-generating strategies.

That diversification is important. Income+ Max is designed to draw potential income from different sources rather than depending solely on bonds. Its strategy includes dividends, bond coupons and option premiums, giving the portfolio multiple potential sources of income.

The result is a portfolio designed for investors who want to maximise their regular income while still participating in potential capital growth.

There is also flexibility in how you use that income. Aside from not having to deposit a minimum amount or lock in your money, you can also reinvest your monthly payouts in USD if your priority is continued wealth accumulation. When you need the cash flow, you can switch to receiving payouts instead.

In other words, your investment strategy doesn’t have to stay fixed just because your financial goals change.

Income+ Max: income today, growth for tomorrow

The appeal of an income-focused portfolio isn’t necessarily about replacing your salary, but giving your money another job.

Your salary remains the primary engine for your day-to-day finances, but your investments can potentially become a second engine that generates income now while remaining invested for longer-term growth.

Income+ Max is designed with that balance in mind. It offers a higher targeted payout than Income+ Preserve and Income+ Enhance, while taking on more market risk through its multi-asset, equity-inclusive approach.

That makes it particularly relevant for investors who are comfortable with greater market volatility and want to pursue higher income without giving up exposure to growth assets.

And because payouts can be reinvested, the same portfolio can potentially serve different purposes over time: build wealth, generate income, or do both concurrently.

As with any investment, however, higher potential income comes with risk. Payouts are not guaranteed, and investment values can rise or fall. Diversification can help spread risk, but it does not eliminate it. Investors should consider their objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance before investing.

Your income doesn’t have to stop at your salary

While you can’t control the price of housing and everyday expenses, nor can you completely ensure your salary increases at the same pace as the cost of living, you can control what you do with the money you have.

Building your savings is a start. Investing for long-term growth is another. And adding potential investment income to the mix can give your finances another source of cash flow, one that doesn’t depend on working more hours or negotiating your next pay rise.

With a diversified approach spanning equities, fixed income and gold, Income+ Max is designed for investors looking to pursue higher income while keeping long-term growth potential in sight.

If you’re ready to explore how investment income could complement your salary and work harder for your financial goals, explore Income+ Max today.

Explore Income+ Max

Income+ portfolio is built with an objective to achieve a target monthly payout range in the current market environment.
