Here is how to decide what advice really costs, when it earns its fee, and the digital alternatives.

The honest answer is: it depends on your situation, not your income. For the basics, protecting your family, keeping an emergency fund, and investing steadily for the long term, most people in Singapore can get the essentials right on their own, or with a low-cost tool doing the heavy lifting. For complex, high-stakes or emotional decisions, a good Adviser can be worth every dollar. This guide walks through what a financial Adviser actually does, what advice costs, when it earns its fee, and the digital alternatives worth knowing about, including setting your saving and investing to run automatically. Figures are as of November 2026, and this is for information, not financial advice.

Do you actually need a financial Adviser in Singapore?

A financial Adviser helps you with some mix of protection (insurance), investing, retirement and CPF planning, and sometimes estate and tax matters. A good one looks at your whole picture, spots gaps, and keeps you on track. That is genuinely useful, but how much of it you need depends on how complicated your finances are.

If your situation is straightforward, a stable income, a home, a long runway to retirement, and goals you understand, you may need far less hand-holding than the industry implies. If your situation is complex, with a business, property, a blended family, or significant wealth, professional advice starts to pay for itself.

One thing to get right before you engage anyone: check that they are actually licensed. According to MoneySense, Singapore’s national financial education programme, job titles such as “financial planner”, “wealth manager” and “financial consultant” are not regulated, so the title alone tells you nothing. Only MAS-authorised firms and representatives may give advice on investment and insurance products. Every authorised representative has a unique MAS number you can ask for, and you can verify both the firm and the individual on two free registers: the MAS Financial Institutions Directory and the MAS Financial Institution Representatives Register. Do that before the first meeting, not after.

Is it worth paying for a financial Adviser?

This comes down to what you pay and what you get back. The tricky part in Singapore is that “what you pay” is often not obvious, because of how Advisers are paid.

There are broadly two models. Commission-based Advisers are paid out of the products they sell you, for example through sales charges built into unit trusts or investment-linked insurance plans. The advice can feel free, but you are paying through the product, and the model can create a pull toward products that pay the Adviser more. Fee-based or fee-only Advisers charge you directly, as a flat fee, an hourly rate, or a percentage of assets, and take smaller or no commissions. You pay more visibly, but the incentive to push particular products is weaker.

MoneySense is clear that Advisers must disclose the fees and charges you will bear and their share of any commissions, and it suggests a simple question worth asking anyone who advises you: “How is my financial Adviser being remunerated?” The answer tells you a lot.

How much does financial advice cost in Singapore?

There is no single number, because it depends on the model and the products. With commission-based advice, the cost is embedded in the product’s sales charge and ongoing fees. With fee-based advice, you will see an explicit fee. Rather than chase an average, ask for the Adviser’s disclosure document, read the product’s fees, and work out the total you will pay each year. Paying is worth it when the advice solves a problem you could not solve yourself, and the trigger situations below are where that case is strongest.

Can you manage your money without an Adviser?

For the basics, yes, and Singapore gives you an official playbook to do it. The Basic Financial Planning Guide, published jointly by MAS, MoneySense, the CPF Board, the Association of Banks in Singapore, the Association of Financial Advisers (Singapore) and the Life Insurance Association, boils sound planning down to a few rules of thumb:

Keep three to six months of expenses as emergency savings.

Aim for death and total permanent disability cover of around nine times your annual income, and critical-illness cover of around four times, while spending no more than about 15% of your income on protection.

Invest at least 10% of your income for retirement and other long-term goals.

That is most of what good planning involves, set out by the regulator and the industry together. The free MyMoneySense tool can turn it into a personalised snapshot. From there, getting your first six figures invested is largely a matter of consistency, and matching your investments to the risk you can tolerate so you can stay invested through the rough patches.

The honest limit: doing it yourself takes a little time and discipline, and it does not cover genuinely complex situations. If that sounds like more effort than you will realistically put in, the alternatives below close the gap.

What are the alternatives to a financial Adviser?

You are no longer choosing only between “pay a human” and “do everything yourself”. The middle ground has grown.

Do it yourself with low-cost funds.

You can build and run a diversified portfolio through a brokerage using low-cost index funds and ETFs. MoneySense itself notes that if you do not need advice, buying through bank or online fund platforms “may cost less” than going through an Adviser. If you want to understand the building blocks, start with building a portfolio from low-cost index funds.

Use the free government tools for the plan.

MoneySense and MyMoneySense give you the framework and a personalised check at no cost, which covers the planning layer that many people hire an Adviser for.

Use a robo-Adviser for the investing.

A robo-Adviser is a MAS-regulated platform that builds and runs a diversified portfolio for you at a low annual fee, with no Adviser meeting. It is the automated middle path between full DIY and a human Adviser: you answer a few questions, fund the account, and it handles the investing and rebalancing. For a full explainer of how these automated platforms actually work, see What is digital wealth management?, and if your real question is which to trust for the decision-making, see AI vs human financial advice. As a worked example on cost, a regulated platform that runs a diversified portfolio for you like Syfe charges managed-portfolio fees from 0.65% a year with no minimum, falling to 0.25% at the top tier (as of 1 January 2026, subject to GST).

Pay only for the advice.

If you want a human but not the commission conflict, fee-only Advisers let you pay directly for the plan and keep product sales out of it.

A quick way to see where you fit:

Option

Best for

Typical cost basis

Effort

Who it suits

Do it yourself

Straightforward, long-term investing

Fund and platform fees only

Higher

Confident, hands-on investors

Robo-Adviser

A diversified portfolio on autopilot

Low annual % of assets

Low

Most people who want it handled cheaply

Human financial Adviser

Complex, high-stakes or emotional decisions

Commission or explicit fee

Lowest

Complex finances, or those who want a person accountable

When should you get a financial Adviser?

A human Adviser usually earns the fee when the stakes or the complexity are high. Consider engaging one when you face:

Estate and legacy planning, or passing on wealth.

Tax, CPF and SRS optimisation beyond the basics.

A business, or complex and illiquid assets.

A large or high-net-worth portfolio where small decisions carry big dollar consequences.

A major life change: marriage, a child, buying property, divorce, an inheritance, or relocating.

A tendency to panic in downturns, where a steady hand keeps you from selling at the bottom.

The plain reality that you will not do the basics yourself, where paying for discipline beats doing nothing.

If none of these apply, you can likely start with the DIY route or a robo-Adviser and bring in a human later, when a specific, complex need arises.

What is digital wealth management?

AI vs human financial advice: which should you trust?

Why you should put your finances on autopilot

How to build your first 100K in Singapore

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a financial Adviser to start investing in Singapore?
No. You can open a brokerage or robo-Adviser account and start with a diversified, low-cost portfolio on your own.
