Here is what you actually get for the minimum, and how digital wealth platforms deliver much of it without one.

Private banking is sold as the top tier of wealth management: a dedicated banker, a tailored portfolio, access to deals ordinary investors never see. The catch is the door. In Singapore, meaningful private banking really begins somewhere between SGD 1 million and SGD 5 million in investable assets, which puts it out of reach for most people who are otherwise doing well.

Here is the part the marketing skips. A lot of what you pay that minimum for, a diversified portfolio that is professionally managed, rebalanced and matched to your goals, is no longer locked behind a private bank. Technology has unbundled it and cut the price. Much of it now comes from letting a rules-based platform run the portfolio for you, at a fraction of the cost. This guide explains what private banking actually costs to enter, what the fee really buys, and how digital wealth platforms now deliver much of the same for far less. It is general information, not financial advice, and every figure is dated so you can check it.

What is private banking, and what is the minimum in Singapore?

Private banking is the service a bank reserves for wealthy clients. It bundles investment management, a named relationship manager, lending against your assets, and planning for things like estates and tax, all under one roof. The appeal is having a person who knows your whole financial picture and can act on it.

The minimums rise in steps, and the labels matter because banks use “private” loosely. As a rough guide for Singapore, and these figures move and are often set at a relationship manager’s discretion, so confirm the current number with each bank:

Tier

What it is

Typical entry (indicative)

Priority / premier banking

Entry-level affluent service, not true private banking

About SGD 200,000 to SGD 350,000

Private-client tier

The junior “private” tier, more advice and products

About SGD 1 million to SGD 1.5 million

True private bank

Full private banking, bespoke service

SGD 5 million and up

So the perks-heavy premier accounts start around SGD 200,000 to SGD 350,000, the “private client” tiers at DBS, OCBC, Citi and Standard Chartered sit near SGD 1 million to SGD 1.5 million, and the genuine private banks, including DBS Private Bank, Bank of Singapore and UOB Private Bank, ask for SGD 5 million or more. Citi’s private bank is pitched at the ultra-wealthy, reportedly from USD 25 million. For most investors, even successful professionals building a sizeable portfolio from a standing start, the seven-figure door simply does not open.

What do you actually pay the minimum for?

It helps to separate the status from the substance. Strip away the airport lounge access and the invitations, and a private bank’s core value to an investor comes down to a few things: a diversified portfolio someone manages for you, ongoing advice, access to funds and products you could not buy alone, and, for larger clients, lending and estate structuring.

Three of those, portfolio management, advice and access, are exactly what technology has made cheaper and more widely available over the past decade. A low-cost platform can build and run a diversified portfolio, rebalance it automatically, and guide you through risk and goals without a SGD 1 million balance. What stays genuinely private-bank territory is the heavy, bespoke work: lending structured around a complex balance sheet, multi-jurisdiction estate and tax planning, and very large tailored mandates. If you need those, a private bank earns its fee. If what you actually want is a well-run portfolio, you are paying a steep entry price for the parts that have already been democratised.

Digital private banking: the mass-affluent alternative

“Digital private banking” is shorthand for getting private-banking-style wealth management through a regulated online platform, at a minimum that mass-affluent investors can actually meet. The model is sometimes called digital wealth management or robo-advisory. The substance is the same: the platform profiles your goals and risk, builds a diversified portfolio, and keeps it on track, all for a small annual fee rather than a seven-figure entry ticket.

What these platforms replicate well is the everyday engine of wealth management. Portfolios are usually built around the low-cost index funds these platforms hold at the core, which spread your money across hundreds or thousands of holdings. The platform rebalances when markets drift your mix off target, reinvests dividends, and tracks progress toward a goal. Before any of that, it runs a profiling step, matching a portfolio to the risk you can actually live with, which is the same suitability check a private banker is meant to do, done through a questionnaire instead of a meeting. In Singapore this sits inside a clear regulatory frame: the Monetary Authority of Singapore issued its Guidelines on the Provision of Digital Advisory Services on 8 October 2018, which let licensed platforms serve retail investors under defined rules.

Digital vs private banking: what you get, what you give up

An honest comparison matters here, because the two are not identical and pretending otherwise helps no one.

Feature

Digital wealth platform

Traditional private bank

Minimum

None to low

About SGD 1m to SGD 5m

Cost

Small annual percentage of assets

Commissions or retainer, plus product fees

What is managed

Diversified investment portfolio

Portfolio plus lending, estate, tax, whole balance sheet

Private-market access

Increasingly yes, via accredited-investor tiers

Yes

Human relationship

Lighter, advisory or on-demand

Dedicated private banker who knows you

Lending and estate structuring

No

Yes

The verdict is not that one wins outright. For a diversified, professionally managed portfolio, digital wins clearly on cost, minimum and access, and it removes the temptation to tinker. For bespoke lending, a complex multi-country estate, or a very large tailored mandate, a private bank still earns its keep. What you give up on the digital side is mostly the deep human relationship and the balance-sheet services, and whether that trade is worth it depends on how complex your situation really is. Choosing between an algorithm-led platform and a human adviser is its own decision, and one worth thinking through separately from the question of minimums.

How a mass-affluent investor gets started

The path is deliberately short. You sign up and verify your identity, answer a risk and goals questionnaire, get matched to a portfolio, fund it, and let it run. Take Syfe, a MAS-licensed digital wealth platform in Singapore (Capital Markets Services Licence No. CMS100837), as a worked example of the model.

For the core offering there is no minimum to start. Syfe’s managed portfolios carry a management fee that runs from 0.65% a year at the entry tier down to 0.25% a year for the largest balances, as of 1 January 2026 and subject to GST. You can see what the annual management fee actually comes to at each tier. That is the literal version of wealth management without the minimum: a diversified, rebalanced portfolio for a fraction of a percent a year, with no seven-figure gate.

There is also a step up that stays honest about who it is for. Investors who reach SGD 350,000 in assets and qualify as an Accredited Investor, an MAS status based on income or wealth thresholds, can access Syfe’s accredited-investor tier, Syfe Private Wealth. It adds dedicated, non-commissioned advisers and private-market funds, including private credit and fixed-maturity funds from managers such as BlackRock and Monroe Capital, that were historically private-bank-only. The notable part is the entry point: SGD 350,000, against the SGD 1.5 million to SGD 5 million a bank would ask for comparable access. These products are open only to Accredited Investors, and private-market investments carry higher risk and lower liquidity than a standard portfolio, so they are a step up in both access and risk, not a free upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do you need for private banking in Singapore?
It depends on the tier. Premier or priority banking starts around SGD 200,000 to SGD 350,000, “private client” tiers around SGD 1 million to SGD 1.5 million, and true private banks from SGD 5 million. Figures are indicative as of Nov 2026 and set at each bank’s discretion, so confirm directly.

Can I get wealth management without a million dollars?
Yes. Regulation and custody protect against platform failure and fraud, not against markets falling. Your capital is still at risk either way.

What is an Accredited Investor in Singapore?
An MAS status for investors who meet set wealth or income thresholds, broadly net personal assets above SGD 2 million (with the primary residence capped at SGD 1 million of that), net financial assets above SGD 1 million, or income of at least SGD 300,000 in the past 12 months. Confirm the current thresholds with MAS, as they are periodically reviewed.

Is digital private banking worth it versus a traditional private bank?
For a well-run, diversified portfolio at low cost, yes, for most mass-affluent investors.
