As of 31 October 2024, healthcare is the third largest sector in the S&amp;P 500 with a weighting of 11.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that everybody needs healthcare at some point, many investors see this sector as a long-term play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Healthcare tailwinds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthcare enjoys several structural tailwinds that go beyond the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ageing populations and longer life expectancy.<\/strong> As we live longer \u2013 and often with chronic diseases \u2013 there will be a need for more medical care to maintain quality of life.<\/li><li><strong>Rising medical expenditure. <\/strong>About $8.3 trillion is spent on healthcare globally, demonstrating good growth prospects for the industry. In the US alone, healthcare spending is projected to be over $4 trillion \u2013 20% of the country\u2019s GDP. In Singapore, healthcare spending is around 6% of our GDP and could go up to 9% by 2029.<\/li><li><strong>Medical and technological advances. <\/strong>Last year,<strong> <\/strong>$44 billion was raised globally in health innovation \u2013 twice as much as 2020. We\u2019re seeing breakthroughs in oncology, immunology, and diseases previously thought to be untreatable. Healthcare has both defensive and growth characteristics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The healthcare sector has both defensive and growth characteristics. As such, it can play a \u201cvaluable role\u201d in investor portfolios, according to an investment note from UBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Healthcare is a defensive sector because of its low correlation to economic swings and other global macroeconomic uncertainties.
